to do something in a manner that's not the standard/usual/wornout one

if you ever had to rehab pathways in forests or fields
after a year or more of abandon you'd clearly see the idea
of the metaphor ;-)

To reject the normal and seek out the unusual. It is usually found in
travel stories where the traveler does not visit the usual tourist
spots and instead seeks out unusual or different areas to see.
