my friend whose first language is NOT english, is looking for an
English name for himself.
he need a name begins with R for some reasons.

Rex is the one in his mind at the moment. he wants to know if this name
is ok for an ordinary guy and is not associated with doggies' name,
perverts or whatever.

It does sound like a dog's name to me, just as King would. I might not
be typical.

How about Robert or Richard or Ronald? See

In America, at least, Rex is both a man's and a dog's name. He might
get a few comments from uncouth boars, but no one will actually find it
odd that his parents named him Rex.

I have known a couple of Rexes over the years...
